Old Beginnings

I mentioned recently that I’d just finished my MPhys at the University of Surrey. On Monday I started my PhD at the University of Surrey. I can’t help feeling that I’m repeating myself!

Still, I arrived all optimistic and keen to get stuck in only to find that after a three hour paperwork meeting I had nothing to do. To exacerbate matters my supervisor isn’t even in the country this week or next! So I’ve fallen back on what I learned on my MPhys research year – independent work.

It’s been interesting working under my own direction for a while, but difficult finding a good variety of useful things to do. I did manage to get email contact with my supervisor in the end, and I even have an idea of what my goals are supposed to be. Overall my first week has been challenging and often boring, but I’ve been excited to be doing it nonetheless. I wonder how long that feeling will last……

Best of luck with the journey. Remember that you’re doing what you’re passionate about, and if you don’t remember that, rediscover it! 🙂
